Things to Consider When Designing Your Nursery

It's no secret I had always envisioned a pink dreamland for my daughter's nursery. But if you've read about my gender reveal and follow me on Instagram you know I've been dealt some different cards – a BOY.

Planning my son's nursery has been quite the challenge for me because I wanted the room to be a bright and airy place I can enjoy, but at the same time I wanted the nursery to have a masculine feel to it.

How to Design a Nursery

After countless hours of pinning and searching for Boy Nursery Ideas, I decided to create my own inspiration board that incorporated the various items I liked.  The best way to start planning your son or daughter's nursery is to find key pieces you love and then build around them.

Using a program like Polyvore is a great way to bring your inspiration to life. As you can see below, I used key pieces (like my glider and crib) to get my board started and the rest came together pretty easily.

Shop at Target

Target has tons of adorable items to decorate your nursery! I am obsessed with their animal heads! I originally saw the animal heads at Land of Nod but Target's dupes are a third of the price and just as adorable.

Target's Cloud Island Collection has super cute bins and storage solutions and all of the pieces are generally under $20.00! These pom pom gray curtains are from Target and they definitely pull together the look of our gray and white neutral nursery.

Search for the Best Pricing

Our modern white crib is the Hudson Crib by Babyletto. I first found this crib on Wayfair and after a little research, I found it on Amazon about $80.00 cheaper. Amazon, Wayfair, Overstock, and Joss & Main are some of the many discounted stores where you can find trendy designer pieces for less.

But it's always a good practice to double check that your item isn't cheaper on Amazon because you just can't beat Amazon Prime two-day shipping!

Think Outside the Box

We knew we wanted to include a closet system to keep Jack's things organized but we definitely didn't want to spend a lot of money on a temporary system that he wouldn't use very long. We ended up going with Ikea's Algot storage system. This system is primarily used for garage and laundry room storage because it is all exposed, but it is much cheaper then all of the other options.

As you can see from the photo above, the Algot storage system works really well for a baby's nursery. The bins are smooth and easy to slide in and out and you can customize the layout to fit your space.

Don't Wait to Purchase

This is a hard one. You see that amazing nursery chair in the image above? Well, once I decided that was the chair I wanted it was sold out. Not just sold out, but sold out for the next 6 months! Fortunately, I had signed up to be notified when the Babyletto Kiwi Glider came back in stock and I purchased it right there on the spot!

Apparently, Wayfair got three chairs in stock and then sold out within ten minutes. I was at Target at the time I got the notification and I just stopped what I was doing, sat down in the home decor aisle, and I managed to be one of those three people that got the chair.

Lesson learned. From then on I decided to purchase items for the nursery the moment I saw them. You also don't really need to put your main nursery decor items on your baby registry, especially if you have some can't live without key items.

Do Your Research

Above all, make sure you do your research and check that all of the items (especially big things like the crib and dresser) have a good rating and have all the certifications to keep your baby safe.
